“Glee”‘s Madonna Episode Posts Big Ratings, “American Idol” Falls

Consider the new “Glee” timeslot an overwhelming success.

Despite receiving a weaker lead-in from “American Idol,” which posted one of its worst performance show numbers ever (19.1 million viewers, 6.7 adults 18-49 rating), “Glee” held up fairly well, dropping only about 5% to a 5.3 adults 18-49 rating.

While the excessive hype behind Tuesday’s “Power of Madonna” episode likely bolstered the rating by a few tenths, there is no way the episode would have posted this kind of rating in its freshman fall, indicating that there has been a legitimate surge of interest this spring.

Because “Idol” ran a few minutes into the “Glee” hour, the final number for “Glee” will likely dip by a tenth or two, but it will still close out with an impressive number.

Average viewership for the episode was 13.5 million.
