As many pro wrestling fans and critics guessed, the Donald Trump storyline on RAW was not originally scheduled to end after one week.
While it is unclear when WWE officials opted to limit the angle, which saw Trump reign over RAW as its new owner, to a single week, it is known that the initial conception of the angle called for it to last for more than a month. WWE workers familiar with plans had been negative on the future of the angle, but prior to this weekend, most were under the impression that Trump would remain RAW’s owner for several weeks.
Exact details on what changed remain unknown, but WWE officials were reportedly unimpressed with the audience reaction for Donald Trump’s purchase on last week’s show. In fact, the $235,000 ticket refund–which is not the type of announcement that garners major national media attention–was largely a move to get Trump over as a babyface in the arena.
Of course, some have wondered why WWE made such an effort to get Trump over if he was going to be leaving the RAW ownership post in a week’s time. It is known that much of RAW still needed to be written as of early this weekend, so there was likely internal debate about where the angle was headed through Sunday evening.
