Renewed: CBS Confirms Season 3 for “Under the Dome,” S2 for “Extant”

What became a foregone conclusion once its ratings turned around late in the second season is now a reality: campy CBS drama “Under the Dome” will be back for a third season.

CBS made the announcement of the summer show’s continuation Thursday. It also booked summer drama “Extant” for a second season.

New drama “Zoo” and returning reality favorite “Big Brother” will also air during the summer of 2015.

“We’re committed to delivering our viewers and advertisers year-round programming with a wide variety of storytelling,” said Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment. “We continue to see summer as a great place for unique concepts, innovative business models and passionate television audiences.”

While their live broadcast ratings were modest, “Under the Dome” and “Extant” routinely perked up in DVR-supplemented data. They also benefit commercially from a content partnership with Amazon Prime.

— The news was not good for all CBS summer series. “Reckless” will not be back for another season.
