Despite airing on Easter and facing head-to-head competition from NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” ABC’s “American Idol” held up well Sunday night.

According to fast national data posted by Showbuzz, “Idol” averaged a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating and 7.39 million overall viewers from 8-10PM.

The numbers only slightly trail the 1.7 rating and 7.51 million viewer mark posted by last week’s broadcast. Considered the aforementioned circumstances, that decline does not even remotely constitute a cause for alarm.

“Idol” was quite competitive with NBC’s live “Jesus Christ Superstar” special. In terms of adults 18-49, “Idol” actually tied “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the 9PM hour (both drew a 1.7). It narrowly trailed the musical at 8PM (1.5 vs. 1.7).
