Wave goodbye to any lingering questions about Meghan Trainor’s star wattage or ability to transition from a radio and streaming success story into album seller. Her debut LP “Title” is selling like hotcakes.
Shortly before its Monday release, Hits Daily Double noted that the album was expected to sell at least 150,000. The publication left open the possibility for an upgrade, and that upgrade is here.
As of Tuesday evening, Trainor’s “Title” is on track for a bow in the 175-200,000 range. It will easily rank as the week’s best-selling album.
Trainor is thus far developing a knack for overperforming.
Last September, Trainor’s four-song “Title” EP obliterated opening week sales forecasts. Instead of moving the expected 9-11,000 first-week copies, the “All About That Bass”-fueled cut sold 21,000. And it remained hot until effectively being replaced by the pre-order for her “Title” LP.
While the upgrade for the “Title” LP is not nearly as significant percentage-wise, it represents a more valuable raise from a revenue standpoint.
It also carries meaning from a benchmarking standpoint. If “Title” indeed sells 175-200,000 in its first week, it will have opened with a better first-week total than recent albums from breakthrough artists like Ariana Grande (169,000 for “My Everything,” 138,000 for “Yours Truly”), Sam Smith (166,000 for “In the Lonely Hour”) and Lorde (129,000 for “Pure Heroine”).
