KONGOS’ second reign atop the Mediabase Alternative Airplay chart has come to an end.
For the seven days ending May 9, The Black Keys’ “Fever,” not KONGOS’ “Come With Me Now” was the most-played song at alternative radio. “Come with Me Now,” which still reached the alternative radio format’s largest overall audience, slipped to #2 for airplay.
After rocketing to #1 faster than any song by a debut band since Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life,” the KONGOS track temporarily ceded its #1 position to Fitz and the Tantrums’ smash “The Walker.” It then reclaimed the number one position in advance of “Fever'”s rise to the top.
The “Fever” ascension comes days before the release of The Black Keys’ new album “Turn Blue.”
Other alternative airplay moves for the seven days ending May 9:
— Bleachers’ debut “I Wanna Get Better” reached a new peak of #7.
— “Giants,” the breakthrough from Bear Hands, elevated to #10.
— With 324 additional spins, Jack White’s red-hot “Lazaretto” was by far the week’s biggest airplay gainer. No other song enjoyed a gain of even half as many spins. Certain for a top ten run, the song is currently #13 on the airplay chart.
— While Lorde’s “Glory & Gore” slipped to #15 on the chart, it gained additional airplay this week. The launch of “Tennis Court” at pop radio–and on some alternative stations–definitely siphoned some buzz from the singer-songwriter’s “Glory,” but it did not erase the song from the map.
— Pegged as a song to watch by Headline Planet, Tove Lo’s breakthrough “Habits (Stay High)” continues to make notable moves at the alternative format. The song, which enjoyed alt radio’s fourth largest airplay gain (behind only “Lazaretto,” “Fever” and Big Data’s “Dangerous”), reached a new peak of #39.
