“42” Dominates Box Office as “Scary Movie 5” Flops

Well-reviewed Jackie Robinson biopic “42” debuted at the high end of expectations this weekend en route to an easy box office victory.

The film hit a home run with $27.3 million in receipts, a total that nearly doubled that of rival newcomer “Scary Movie 5.”

That film, tepidly reviewed, earned only $15.2 million, which marks a decline of more than 50% from the $40.2 million grossed by predecessor “Scary Movie 4.”

“The Croods” ($13.2 million), “GI Joe: Retaliation” ($10.8 million) and “Evil Dead” ($9.5 million) rounded out the top five.
