Neither NBC nor Dick Wolf is a stranger to spin-offs. But both are included an unusual news report, which says that the network is considering spinning off his buzzworthy freshman drama “Chicago Fire.”
“Fire,” which debuted to soft ratings, has grown in viewership throughout the inaugural season and now outperforms fellow newcomer and timeslot competitor “Nashville.” That series, which airs on ABC, launched to far more initial buzz and critical acclaim.
Having already seen its freshman season episode order increased to 24, “Fire” had been viewed as a near-lock for second season renewal. News of the spin-off not only makes that renewal seem more certain but also confirms NBC’s interest in expanding the show’s footprint.
According to Deadline, the potential spin-off, which would focus on the Chicago Police Department, would be introduced with a backdoor in the first season finale. As the spin-off is not yet confirmed, news on which cast would transfer to the new series has not yet broken.
