There was no chance WWE Summerslam’s John Cena vs. CM Punk main-event would live up to the standard set by their classic Money in the Bank match, and indeed it did not.
WWE, nonetheless, is hoping the post-match angle will be enough to keep interest in the product alive.
The solid but unspectacular Cena-Punk match ended when Punk delivered a second GTS to Cena. Triple H, the guest referee, counted to three, even though the viewers and announcers saw that Cena’s foot was on the bottom rope. It was played off like a “mistake” from Triple H, rather than a screwjob, and Cena’s protest was minimal. He headed to the back as Punk celebrated at the ringside area.
Triple H raised Punk’s hand in declaration of victory and then made his own way up the ramp. As Punk continued celebrating the win, Kevin Nash, in street clothes, came through the crowd, entered the ring and attacked CM Punk. He delivered a Jackknife and then headed back through the crowd. Triple H returned to the ringside area, expressing confusion at his old buddy’s actions.
Alberto Del Rio, meanwhile, headed to the ring to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase. The bell rang, Del Rio kicked Punk in the head and then scored a quick-and-easy pinfall victory. He leaves WWE Summerslam as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Recently, Kevin Nash Tweeted an offer to become CM Punk’s muscle. It is unclear if that issue will play into the storyline, but it could conceivably do so, with Nash perhaps saying that since Punk rejected his offer, he instead decided to help Alberto Del Rio win the title.
