The recently-released Golden Globe nominations provided ample discussion about controversial selections and potential “snubs,” but no revelation raised more eyebrows than the success of “The Tourist” in the comedy/musical category. Promoted as a dramatic thriller, the critically-panned box office disappointment appeared to have no chance of any awards attention, let alone in a seemingly-unrelated genre.
But when the Golden Globe nominations came in, that expected absence was not realized. Instead, stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie both picked up lead comedy/musical acting nominations, while the film itself is up for the top musical/comedy of the year.
Explaining the situation, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Phil Berk issued a statement attributing the comedic categorization to director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.
“The Tourist was submitted by the studio as a drama,” explains Berk. “However, the filmmakers involved with the film expressed their opinion to us that the film should be categorized as a comedy. Given the differing opinions, we asked the studio to screen the film for us in advance, and collectively, we decided that the elements of preposterous fun lent the film more to a comedy than a straight drama category. The issue was raised not by the HFPA but by the director himself.”
