In a surprise appearance at Comic-Con, acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro confirmed that he will be involved in an upcoming adaptation of Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion” ride.

A “Haunted Mansion” movie was previously developed in 2003 with Eddie Murphy in the starring role. The comedic adaptation grossed $75.8 million domestically and thus failed to reach the success of fellow ride adaptation “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

The upcoming version will be a straight horror film, however, with del Toro joking, “We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s calls.” Del Toro will be producing and co-writing the film; directing remains a possibility, but it has not been confirmed.
