“Dear John” expectedly opened as a box office success Friday, scoring the highest-ever opening day for a Super Bowl weekend release.
With an estimated $13.8 million in receipts Friday, “John” could easily land north of $30 million for the weekend as it claims victory. In addition to setting the Super Bowl record, “John” will also debut with the top opening gross for any Nicholas Sparks adaptation.
With “Avatar” settling into second Friday with $6 million, “From Paris with Love,” the other new release, was forced to settle for third with a soft $3 million.
“Edge of Darkness” ($2.3 million) and “When in Rome” ($2 million) settled for fourth and fifth, respectively.
