“The Proposal” Tops “Year One,” “Hangover” in Debut

Friday night belonged to “The Proposal” — the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy earned an estimated $12.4 million, which marks one of the best openings for a June-August “chick flick” in years.

Considering the movie is attracting couples, its Saturday performance should also be strong, putting it in great position to take the weekend box office crown. “The Hangover,” which has won for the last two weeks, landed in third with $8.5 million, narrowly behind new entry “Year One.”

“Up” and “The Talking of Pelham 1 2 3” completed Friday’s top five with $6.1 million and $3.2 million, respectively.
