From a live+same-day ratings standpoint, few recent drama launches have been more disappointing than NBC’s “Rise.”
As a sentimental drama, “Rise” seemed like a theoretically strong companion for the network’s smash hit “This Is Us.” Given its musical theater element, it also seemed capable of pairing well with “The Voice.”
Neither hope came to fruition. The premiere drew modest ratings despite airing out of the “This Is Us” season finale. The show delivered even weaker numbers upon moving to its regular slot after “The Voice.” The past three episodes have only managed 0.7 ratings in the adults 18-49 demographic.
Compounding the disappointment: a lack of critical buzz. The reception to the show pales in comparison to that for Jason Katims’ previous series “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood.”
In short, “Rise” has not clicked. It should therefore come as no surprise that NBC opted not to renew the show for season two.
The in-progress first season will be its only season.
