While iTunes sales count toward vote totals on NBC’s “The Voice,” they have no direct impact on the “American Idol” competition.
“Idol” recordings that manage to make waves on the iTunes sales chart, therefore, warrant commendation.
Clark Beckham’s “Earned It” deserves a special degree of commendation.
As of press time at 1PM ET, the “Idol” contestant’s take on The Weeknd’s smash was up to #66 on the all-genre iTunes sales chart. Not simply successful in a vacuum, the song’s iTunes performance bests that of an “Earned It” cover recorded by one of this season’s “The Voice” contestants.
Rob Taylor’s version, which reached a greater number of viewers and actually counted for votes, failed to enter the Top 100 on iTunes upon arrival last month.
Not simply successful in that “Idol” vs. “Voice” battle, Beckham’s single is also the highest-charting of this week’s four “Idol” recordings.
The next-highest release is Nick Fradiani’s “Because the Night.” Widely separated from the Beckham track, it was #240 when this story went to print.
Fellow top three finalist Jax follows with “My Generation.” “Want to Want Me,” which was recorded by the eliminated fourth-place finisher Rayvon Owen, sits at #1083.
