Earlier this year, “All of Me” became John Legend’s first Top 20 hit. It then became his first Top 15 hit, his first Top 10 hit and his first Top 5 hit.
This week, it officially becomes his first career number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
In the tightest chart race since February 2012, “All of Me” dethrones Pharrell’s long-reigning “Happy” to claim the top spot on Billboard’s definitive single track chart.
A thirty week journey, the song’s ascent to number one is the third longest in Hot 100 history and the longest within one release cycle. Los Del Rio’s “Macarena,” which reached number one after 33 weeks, only did so once the Bayside Boys remix became a pop culture phenomenon. Lonestar’s “Amazed,” which took 31 weeks, did so after a pop and adult contemporary crossover breathed new life into the country song.
Ariana Grande’s “Problem (featuring Iggy Azalea)” and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy (featuring Charli XCX)” follow “Happy” in the third and fourth positions, respectively. Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse (featuring Juicy J)” claims fifth.
Also in the top ten: Jason DeRulo’s “Talk Dirty (featuring 2 Chainz)” (6), DJ Snake & Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What” (7), Justin Timberlake’s “Not a Bad Thing” (8), Idina Menzel’s “Let it Go” (9) and Bastille’s “Pompeii” (10).
