Late this week, Pharrell’s “Happy” achieved the seemingly impossible: it usurped the iTunes single sales chart throne from Katy Perry’s dominant “Dark Horse (featuring Juicy J).”
Its reign at number one proved to be a short one, however, as the Perry song is already back to the peak position.
Since reaching number one, “Dark Horse” has withstood advances from songs like Aloe Blacc’s “The Man” and Passenger’s “Let Her Go,” both of which received immense buzz for their inclusion in acclaimed television commercials.
“Happy,” which gained its own notoriety after tracking a Beats commercial, had faced the same struggle until cracking through this week.
At press time, Jason DeRulo’s “Talk Dirty (featuring 2 Chainz)” follows “Dark Horse” and “Happy” at number three on the iTunes sales chart. Passenger’s “Let Her Go” claims fourth, besting A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera’s fifth-place single “Say Something.”
Bastille’s “Pompeii” (6), Pitbull’s “Timber (featuring Ke$ha)” (7), Aloe Blacc’s “The Man” (8), John Legend’s “All of Me” (9) and Lorde’s “Team” (10) also appear in the top portion of the iTunes chart.
