Steve Carell’s run on “The Office” ended two seasons ago, and for better or worse (more often the latter), the show has progressed without him.
Still, with the show ending its nine season run this spring, many assumed the import’s original star–and the man behind Michael Scott, one of the most popular television characters thus far in the 21st century–would make some sort of appearance in the planned season finale.
Even though the show has crafted its narrative focus on the other characters, its identity is still very much connected to Michael Scott, and it would be a huge surprise if it did not end with a glimpse of Carell’s character.
That glimpse still could happen, but NBC’s Bob Greenblatt did not express significant optimism at the TCA Winter Press Tour.
Explained Greenblatt, “I’m hopeful, but I don’t think he will. He left in the way that he wanted that character to leave, and I think he and [showrunner] Greg Daniels have talked about it. There’s a little Hail Mary pass on a cameo. But I think the decision is he’ll go out without compromising his exit.”
