A Deadline New York report brings an end to rampant speculation about how the ensemble cast of ABC’s “Modern Family” will approach the impending Emmy nomination submission deadline.
According to the report, all principals–including sitcom veteran Ed O’Neill–will be entering the supporting actor field.
There had been a number of different ideas presented regarding the nomination approach. Some were pushing for Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell, the parents of the show’s ‘traditional’ nuclear family, to register for lead acting nods, while others felt that O’Neill’s name value–and more mainstream style of humor–was tailor-made for the chief category.
Ultimately, however, the cast will enter the same two categories (supporting actor or supporting actress) as a sign that no one is bigger than the ensemble.
The move will be made even with awareness that some of the actors, notably from the group of four lead males (O’Neill, Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson), might be crowded out of the nomination mix.
Of course, the fact that “Modern Family” is a virtual lock to score a nomination for Best Comedy (and join “Glee” and “30 Rock” in the frontrunner mix) should be enough to help some of the individual actors get over their potential snubbings.
