Renee Walker Dies In Another “24” Tragedy on FOX

Two weeks, two major deaths, two “silent endings.” FOX’s “24” has definitely raised the stakes as it approaches its series finale, killing off progressive IRK president Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor) and fan favorite Renee Walker (Annie Wersching) in a mere two week span.

Last week, Hassan–a crucial ingredient in the landmark peace process between the Middle Eastern IRK and the Western World–was executed by a terrorist faction committed to derailing the thawing of relations with the US.

But for as tragic as that death was for “24” fans, it could not prepare them for the death of Renee Walker on this Monday’s episode. Having essentially served as a “female Jack Bauer” in her two-season stint on the show, Walker had become the fans’ ideal companion for Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack–she had eclipsed even his prior flame Audrey Raines (Kim Raver) as the most-requested “girlfriend” character.

Her death, achieved by a Russian sniper who feared that Walker’s past undercover stint with the Russian mob could lead her to recognize him and identify Russian involvement in the current conspiracy, came literally moments after Bauer and Walker engaged in long-awaited sexual intercourse. Apparently out of the CTU game and hoping to live a life together, Walker’s death ended another fleeting hope for happiness on the part of Jack Bauer.

Throughout its eight seasons, “24” has made a point of taking no prisoners and promising no happy endings. At the end of season one, Bauer’s wife (and the mother of his daughter, Kim) was killed. At the beginning of season five, former President David Palmer–the inspirational black president who was arguably the most beloved character on the show outside of Chloe O’Brien–was assassinated.

In the build-up to the long-awaited series finale, “24” has not, apparently, gone soft.

  1. I give up, maybe its better that shows being cancelled because what they did was stupid and if this is the way its gonna be then whatever. Trying not to be formulaic FAILED…Teri, Claudia, Audrey… yea yea yea we get it JAck’s not allowed to be happy, and kick-ass female characters who are happy don’t last (Michelle)…right, whatever… I won’t be watching Monday night.

  2. This is after all people, 24, where there are very few if any happy endings. That being said I found it extremely disturbing anyway to kill the potential happiness these two tortured characters were just embarking on. Those sinister 24 writers got me again. If anything positive comes from these tragic story lines, it is our chance to see Kiefer Sutherland’s brilliant acting at his most emotionally distraught and vulnerable best. His performance again last night calls for another Emmy nomination in my opinion.

  3. I think Renee’s death sucks!
After announcing worldwide that season 8 would be the last of 24, you’d expect at least a happy ending for Jack Bauer after all these years.
    But nothing is more true!
It’s like Jack has to suffer for life 🙁

  4. After this, I think it is really good that the show has been cancelled. Neway, I just want to say that I hate this particular plot by writers. FUCK d damn writers n yeah I m not going to watch the reamaining hours.. I really hate 24 now.

  5. I WATCHED 24 FROM THE BEGINNING NOW I AM VERY SORRY FOR WASTING MY TIME THEY ARE CRAZY I WANTED SO MUCH FOR JACK TO BE HAPPY…..

  6. I’m just really hoping this doesn’t lead to Jack and Audrey ending up together somehow. You have to asssume Jack doesn’t die since they’re working on the movie, but I’d even prefer that outcome to Jack ending up with anyone but Renee.

  7. i was totally devasted. did not see this coming with another death and could not believe that it wa renee. i guess jack bauer will not have a happy ending. i just cannot believe it. o well…i kind of think that the ending is going to be sad and he is just going to go off and i think be by himself….and thats the way it will end…then the movie i guess…he will never find happiness.

  8. Ive been a die hard fan of this show from the beginning. Ive put up with the killing of likeable character and characters who brought meaning to the show like Bill Buchanan, Curtis Manning, David Palmer. Jack Bauer has lost his wife, Audrey. The writers have taken it too far by killing off one of Jack’s last chances for happiness, by killing Renee. Before i was bummed about the cancellation of the show after this season but now its actually a good thing. Its better to end it on this final note rather than have him and the fans put up with more shit. RIP Renee and this show.

  9. I gave up on 24 last year because all the people we learned to like and love were killed. I reluctantly renewed watching the show this year. But with the really senseless killing of Renee Walker, I will never again watch the show. This was as stupid as the closing Seinfeld Show, which turned my off on Seinfeld forever. Long ago, I stopped watching NYPD Blue for the same reason, especially when Sipowict’s (sp?) wife and Jimmy Smits died. Shows that portray only death suck. G’bye Keifer!

  10. Another comment. There were hints on a morning show that a 24 movie could follow. Without Renee Walker? As they sed to say on The Sopranos, fuggetaboutit. I won’t waste my money.

  11. I was devastated when I watched the final scene from last nights episode. It’s sad they gave the fans what they wanted, then they took it back. If the writers really wanted to keep the fans watching. They could of at least kept Renee in critical condition. Killing her off so quickly, made no sense to the story. What now is Jack’s motivation, as a person, to continue living and working? When you think about it “he is poison” everyone he becomes close with is harmed, he cannot be happy. I’m honestly scared that they are going to kill off Kim and take everything away.

  12. I am so pissed. I actually thought Jack may get his happy ending. She (Renee) was his other half. His equel. They’d been through the line of fire together and managed to come out on the other side alive. I think the writers of “24” took the easy way out. What is the point in watching “24” now? I only came back every monday for more Jack and Renee. Now, no Renee, no “24”. I somehow wish they could have tricked us and come back next week with ‘oops! That was a mistake!’ or ‘She’s not really dead. We played it so she looked like she was.’ But the truth is, she’s gone and I miss her a lot. RIP Renee Walker. Jack’s kickass girl that will live in our hearts forever. RENEE AND JACK FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. I watched the episodeo to 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. And I was so mad that Renee died. Really I thought that Jack and Renee will be together and live happly ever after. I guess not. Renee was becoming my 2nd favorite character in season 8 and now she’s dead! I feel a bit used. Me watching 24 and that Renee and Jack surived all thoes dangerous task they did together and without killing anyone, she dies. Is there really going to be a movie based on 24? Well I guess there won’t be a happy ending for Jack. This season is like depressed

  14. Yep.

Killing Renee was a terrible idea, guys.

    We like twists, yes.

Is it a twist when you always kill everyone we like except the sitting president, Chloe and Jack?

    Every! Single! One!!?

And you keep worthless characters like Dana and Cole around?

    Moronic.

One thing we like more than twists?

    JACK.

You guys have hurt this poor character too many times.

At this point, if Jack Bauer doesn’t spend the last episode breaking free of the screen and revenge-slaughtering the writers of the show, I will be gravely disappointed.

There’s no correcting this terrible decision!

    Morons!

  15. I was a huge fan of 24, but the death of David Palmer turned me away. I came back to the show and started to like Renee Walker as an equal to Jack Bauer. Killing off Renee Walker will be a MISTAKE the writers and producers will regret. They have alienated the fans to a point of no return. My love for 24 died with Renee Walker. This is the final season? Good riddance, I’m not interested in seeing anymore of this tripe.

    • I do apologize, but we made a point not to post this until her death was revealed to viewers on the west coast, so we did our best to minimize the ‘spoil’ factor.

  16. I kept waiting for someone to administer Renee a “reviving shot” The same one they gave Tony Almeida, remember? I’m still holding on to hope that somehow she’ll be resucitated. It is 24 after all and characters are often dead and up and running for their lives 30 minutes later. Please?

  17. I’ve been a fan of 24 since they started. Renee was dynamic, mysterious, cold blooded, yet very sensual and fun to watch. She could of easily added more to 24 and the following movie. I hope she has a twin sister or something happens as this is a big mistake that the writers killed her off and how they did it. 24 and TV needs strong females as Renee Walker is and now was! Wow! What a let down to a brilliant episode.

  18. I agree with everybody here. Renee’s death really pissed me off! It is a big mistake!

She was raped, used, chocked, almost shot by the Russian mafia and she had to die in the hands of a Russian sniper.

The writer wrote this script for this episode sucks!

  19. As much as I hate the move, I actually like the move. The reason? Jack was out. You could’ve had everyone, including the president, asking him to return. Wouldn’t have mattered–he was out.

People say that Renee should’ve been in critical condition but survived. I disagree. If she was in critical condition, not only would nobody approach Jack to help, but he would refuse if approached because the woman he deeply loves is hanging on for life.

Now, not only is he back in, but he’s going to be at his best…he’s going to be in revenge mode. And there are very few things on television as beautiful as Jack Bauer exacting revenge, especially when it’s for the death of someone he cares about.

  20. Yep…7 eps to go in the season, and Jack is one pissed-off mofo. I have a feeling that Jack will have a death wish now, and that can’t be good for anyone he wants to see dead.

  21. I think Nick is right. I’ve seen every season and have gotta say that Jack is at his best on revenge mode. There wasn’t really another path to take. Yes, maybe they could’ve kidnapped her and then use her as leverage against Jack but that just would’ve been too redundant. The season isn’t over yet guys, pull yourselves together. It’s 24, when has it been predictable? Maybe the writers have a happy ending in store for Jack after all. Perhaps she isn’t dead, the silent clock doesn’t always mean the character dies, it’s used to exemplify an emotional scene. Renee survived a silent clock last season, David Palmer survived it in season 2, who’s to say it won’t happen again?

  22. Hey, that’s the way it goes.. Renee was just another agent.. bad things happen if you wanna roll with the bad guys.
The thing that upsets me more is why do the bad guys always have to be Russian ?
I would find it a lot more plausible if Israel was the country trying to thwart the peace effort.
That being said, I did not like to see her die at all.

  23. Killing Rene was an act of incredible cruelty and stupidity. They could not let Jack be happy!. They only wanted a crazy bastard. There ware too many ways to continue without resorting to this. This writers really are disgusting and really really SUCK!

  24. I hate this show!! well not really (it’s actually one of my most favorites)….but damn it do they always have to kill everyone? Renee was too hot to die. Although, I kinda anticipated that it was gonna happen after the Russian guy decided to pursue them and such =

  25. Honestly?

The comments here confuse the hell out of me. 24 isn’t about Jack Bauer, it’s about something bigger. There will be no happiness for Jack, because he serves his country first, then his own needs.

Renee Walkers death was subsequently a turning point in this horrible excuse for a “24 season.” This may pave the way to an amazing series finale.

I, for one, would like to see Jack happy; however I know not to expect this from 24.

Jack Bauer has lost a lot of people he liked/cared about:
    Teri Bauer
    George Mason
Tony(in season 5, though I doubt he misses him after season 7.)
    Bill Buchanan(what an amazing character/actor.)
    Audrey Raines(insane)
    David Palmer

I wish “24” would end with this SEASON and the movie would not continue the story arc. Instead they should make the movie about Jack, Tony, Bill Buchanan, Chloe, David Palmer, and I want to say Renee but she didn’t know Jack when Palmer was alive.

Don’t put Jennie Scott(Dana Walsh), Cole Ortiz, or Brian Hastings in the film!

  26. Renee’s death was a sad one , but a necessary one. Now Jack is pissed off and ready to tear the Russians apart.

  27. Killing off Renee was short sighted and unnecessary. She brought class and a mysterious tortured sex appeal to the screen and the hope that there can be some happiness and redemption at the end of suffering. Jack’s character – although near super human touches us most by his apparent core vulnerability – to revoke that possibility of a possible dream of happiness is mind boggling.

Renee would have been an excellent part of any future 24 film.

  28. Renne dead? that was stupid! Disgusting!
I am Brazilian. Was a fan. Now look no more. Writer idiot!

  29. The killing was anti-climatic and rushed imo. Time is running out for the show so they had to finish the love story. I was actually surprised the two drove home to Jack’s appartment to have sex. But no, they took the time to drive home, they kiss they have sex, meanwhile the russian assasin (yeah right, he remembers Renee from her undercover mob days) kills the old guy in the other appartment and finally kills Renee. That’s a little bit too much for one episode.

Now Jack has a living lead to the Russian conspiracy group (and not a half dead one, at least before super assassin guy gave him the needle). If I were Jack, I would kill him right on the spot though. And he will catch him, for sure.

If it wasn’t for a big screen movie after the series (that needs Jack Bauer of course), I think Jack, the guy who obviously can’t get killed, would be ready to commit suicide at this point. It would be an ending that makes sense, and they would leave with a bang. I mean, look at all the things that happened to the guy in 8 seasons. Normally, he should be a broken man by now.

  30. I have been really disturbed since I watched that episode of 24. My feelings are hurt and I am really in mourning for Jack. Why can’t he ever be happy? He deserves it 🙁 Never was there a better female companion for him. Now what is he supposed to do!

It was very difficult to watch him break down. It really hurt. I thought for sure that Renee would make the cut for the movie but I guess not.

And I am still hurt by the death of Bill Buchanan. There were too many stupid people on this season and that’s why so many things went wrong.

Gosh I hope they don’t mess with Chloe’s character. Please leave her alone!

  31. I hate Fox and producers!!! Renee can’t die!! Everything is dark in Jack’s life? I think that the franchise must be cancelled!!!!!

  32. It’s surprising to see so many people who claim to be “fans” complaining about a deeply meaningful and tragic death on 24.

Have you been actually watching the same show as the rest of us?

24 is not about happy endings. Never has been. Never will be. If you ever thought otherwise, you’ve been deluding yourself and have absolutely been YOURSELF UNFAITHFUL to the core of 24, most specifically, the core of the character of Jack Bauer.

You should never have been looking for your “happy ending” on this show. Shame on you for calling yourself a “fan” of 24.

The rest of us will gladly now return to watching 24 for what it’s always been about; the tragic existence of Jack Bauer.

  33. I do not agree with hunter. This was, of course, a tragic death, but not a deeply meaningful one. She was shot by an unknown character, because she ‘might have recognized’ him from a long past mission. And to what end? To bring Jack back? To create another shockdeath? Jack could have been brought back a dozen ways. And 24’s greatest asset is not its shockdeaths, but it’s characters, their struggles and feelings (although there are very few left in S8 now Renee is dead). Of course, because of these great characters the shockdeaths are so traumatic. But it’s not a golden rule that in each season half of the cast must die through a shockdeath. And now they sacrificed Renee for this cause which we have seen a dozen times before and it just doesn’t feel right. That’s why each 24 forum is flooded with angry viewers for the past two days like never before. Palmer’s role was played, Michelle was out, but not Renee. Jack and Renee falling in love was the reason a lot of viewers kept watching. Gunblazing Jack is still cool, but in the end 24 is much more than that. It’s about hope, despair, faith, love, and now all these aspects are put aside to see Jack on a vengeance tour against enemies we don’t even know yet. Will that be the final hours of Jack Bauer? Fighting for no greater good at all, not for love, not for hope and not for happiness, but for vengeance against some enemies without a face who gunned down Jack’s ultimate savior after all these years of suffering. This is not what a vast majority of the viewers was hoping for.

  34. just remember in hellywood anything is possible..I did to want to see JACK be happy but we fell in love with the show for YES the characters but also for the un expected.. This one caught everyone by surprise and that is why it was good.. it in the end was not some expected ending… The movie we will have to wait and see what kind of plot it is… I will probably still spend my cash no matter what to see it as will all of you people that are mad right now.

  35. 24 has suffered from weak writing all year, but killing Renee was just plain stupid. The writers did not just kill Renee. They killed 24. I have never missed an episode, but I am through with this show. I will not watch the rest of this season, will not watch the show if it is picked up by another network and will not go to see a movie. This is a wretched ending for what had been a great series.

  36. Oh no! Renee’s dead!

Relax people. Seriously? Lemme tell ya somethin’. Have you all forgotten the very first couple of seasons? Christ, 24 is supposed to piss you off. Ever remember the end to Season 2?

The end to Season 2, or at least the build up, pissed me off so much. Not at the writers, Hell no – I applauded the writers. Why? Because the story pissed me off. One bad thing, after another, after another.

Seriously I was sitting watching every week – almost screaming at the television when yet another thing went wrong. The last episode I was off on the edge of my seat just begging for the trade off with Kingsley to go well. And it did, and Palmer becomes President again – and the LA is safe and yada yada yada.

Then at the very fuckin’ end – Palmer’s life is threatened to the point where the clock ticks out to the sound of gasping for air.

That shit frustrated me to no end – but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it because it invoked true emotions within me.

The killing of Renee Walker is no-where near as tense as the previous seasons have taken us.

Besides – the actor who plays Renee was way too robotic for me to give a damn about her. I mean ok, she’s ‘seen some things, and done some things’ but that doesn’t mean I’m inclined that much to care. She was only in this shit for what? One season and halfs-worth? Gimme a break.

So what. She’s dead. If you’re tuning off Fox and you’re ‘through with this show’ because you didn’t get the outcome you wanted then piss off – you’re clearly getting to soppy for it. Jack’s in revenge mode now. He’s gonna give all he’s got because he’ll have a deathwish. I’ve watched every single episode of 24 and I intend to watch it to the end.

It’s been the best show to ever hit the screens of international television because it does what it does best – it increases tension and it relentlessly deals out the bad luck that happens in the world every single day. It should be that adversity that should make us cheer Jack on.. not take him off our screens.

  37. I’m so pissed!!! I can not believe Ive wasted 185 hours of my life i’ll never get back so far (do the math)watching this freaking show and now they pull this, I mean whats the point? good, so russians and arabs suck, we all know that, does everyone have to die? Well i’ll tell you what, i wont be wasting a 186th hour! I hope the writers see some of this stuff we’re writing and realize their horrific mistake.

  38. Yes I’m sad that Renee’s gone, but you all are a bunch of little whiny bitches who should just be watching Barney & Friends. There’s no way you have been a loyal fan for 8 seasons and just quit watching because of this. Give me a fucking break. Cry some more boo-hoo, the show doesn’t need sensitive little cry babies as fans.

  39. I definitely agree with Hunter and Jim! They are so right. You people who are complaining about Renee dying can go kick rocks because that is what the show has always done. . . Kill the people we like and don’t get me wrong, I loved Renee but it’s a FREAKIN CHARACTER ON A MADE UP TV SHOW. They have to do suprises otherwise the show would be predictable and stupid. This right here, all these comments is exactly what the writers like to see. What would a pool be without water? What would the Iphone be without apps? AND WHAT WOULD 24 BE WITHOUT RUTHLESS MURDERS?!?!?! Come on guys, get over it. . . We all know that EVERYONE on this blog will be centered in front of their TV set on Monday evening at 7/8 central to see Jack take his revenge!!! . . . The show must go on!

  40. I’m not going to quite watching the show, but at the same time I am very sad that Renee was killed. Have her shot, fine, but you don’t have to kill her to get Jack back into the action. If this is the final season I would have wanted Jack to get the girl, or for at least the girl to live if he didn’t. Not the other way around. I wanted her to live because all the others had been harmed or killed. Just once he needs to get a break.

  41. Renee was Jack’s other half! How could she die? With major characters dying every episode now, since last week, i wonder who will be next? So worried it will be kim and her family! I will miss Renee and 24 when it is all over! I hope the writers are not as cruel as to leave Jack with a sad tortured heart, but i would not be surprised after the shock of Renee. i see the end of 24 coming! 🙁

  42. I am wondering if they are setting the stage for Jack to be the ‘bad guy’ in the 24 movie. How much can he have go wrong in his life before he snaps?

  43. Hunter, Jim and Amber: you don’t seem to be watching the show I have been.

The fans of 24 and of Jack do not like the show for only one reason: the are plenty. In the first seasons, for me, it was great to watch Palmer as a great American president, and Jack as his ultimate soldier. Jack, as a man of honor, and courage, and skill.

Reading your posts, one might draw the conclusion that a show can be great because it shocks its audience, and features some guy “in revenge mode.”

That’s asinine. Stupid people may still enjoy a bloody version of peek-a-boo; I, for one, watched the show during the last seasons because I wanted Jack as a character to achieve some level of peace and contentment, because he has sacrificed so much for country and honor and deserves it.

“That’s not what happens on this show!” Is a ridiculous argument in light of its predecessor. If we 24 fans really worship at the altar of the unexpected, how can ANYTHING be something that isn’t allowed to happen?

The way I see it, if Jack’s character ends this season having moved even a little beyond the Jack in the last moments of the first season, then it won’t be satisfying for the people who want a revenge bloodbath.

If he goes out and thrillingly murders all of the bad guys with panache and Jack-style ruthlessness, then where has the character come in 8 SEASONS?

This is the position the writers have put themselves in: 6 hours of boring police drama, or 6 hours of proving their primary character hasn’t grown in 20 or so years of show development.

    This is why I’m upset.

  44. Oh gawsh. Renee was my favorite! I broke down in tears when she died. Curse the Russian mob! Jack shall avenge your death Renee! 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 (I hope somehow she returns… She was so much like me!)

  45. am very dissapointed by her death..why renee?after where the series has reached?i just hope at the end u dont kill jack!!!!

  46. This sucks, I know it was meant to make the scenario as real as possible and a happy ending has been overdone but I honestly think the writers blundered!

  47. Renee Walker was hot. Hot! Hot! It seems to me they could have found peace at the end. i would have liked that.

  48. this is the best season movie i’ve ever watch.considering the fact that the most unimagine ICT was used, the best actise and actresses play the role, getting people to understand the risk involved in too much trust in those believe to be close to them.renee walker is great actress that play her role according the script. well done 24 crew
