“Spy” Wins Weekend Box Office, “San Andreas” Tops “Insidious,” “Entourage” Claims #4

Spy [Fox]

The predictably light weekend box office race fell in favor of critically acclaimed action-comedy “Spy.”

After narrowly losing Friday to “Insidious Chapter 3,” “Spy” leapfrogged the fellow new release and convincingly claimed #1 for the weekend. It earned $30.0 million in its first three days.

“Spy” was not the only film to leapfrog “Insidious Chapter 3” as the weekend progressed.

“San Andreas,” which won last weekend’s box office race, also pulled out in front. It claims #2 this weekend on the strength of its $26.4 million in receipts.

Third for the weekend, “Insidious” earned $23.0 million from Friday through Sunday. Better than the $13.0 million earned by 2011’s “Insidious,” the tally greatly trails the $40.3 million opening weekend mark posted by 2013’s “Insidious Chapter 2.”

New release “Entourage” grabs #4 for the weekend. It earned a soft $10.4 million over the three-day weekend. With Wednesday and Thursday included, it now claims a total gross of $17.8 million.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” closes out the top five thanks to its $8.0 million.
