Ratings: Emmy Awards Ceremony Stays Low In 2017 (Updated)

Preliminary numbers suggest another soft performance for the Emmys.

Update: According to updated numbers posted by Deadline, the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony tied last year’s all-time low performance in overall viewership.

It meanwhile endured a year-over-year loss in adults 18-49.

Hosted by Stephen Colbert, this year’s CBS-broadcast ceremony drew a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating and 11.38 million overall viewers.

Last year’s show, which aired on ABC and featured host Jimmy Kimmel, drew a 2.8 rating and 11.38 million viewers.

The 11.38 million is the all-time viewership low.  This year’s 2.5 adults 18-49 rating is a new demo low.

The 2015 Emmy Awards ceremony drew an average of 11.9 million viewers, which represented a series low.

The 2016 ceremony went even lower; it posted a viewership total of just 11.4 million.

While this year’s official viewership number (and adults 18-49 rating) will not be available until later today, there is reason to believe the event landed near those series low numbers (if not lower).

According to metered market data posted by Programming Insider, Sunday’s 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony drew an 8.2 overnight household rating. The rating trails the 8.4 household figure drawn last year.

While household ratings and viewership figures are not perfectly correlated, they are a decent indicator.

And insofar as this year’s overnight household number trails last year’s mark, there is little reason to believe this year’s show fared markedly better in overall viewership or adults 18-49.
