Ratings Update: “Empire” Declines This Week; “Rosewood” Down in Demo, Up in Viewership

Fast National Update: Wednesday’s “Empire” still easily ranked as the night’s highest-rated and most-watched television show.

It was, however, down on a week-to-week basis.

This week’s “Empire” posted a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating with 11.200 million total viewers. The numbers trail those of last week’s broadcast, which drew a 4.6 with 11.677 million opposite the CMA Awards.

On a live+same-day basis, Wednesday’s “Empire” was the lowest-rated since the series’ second episode. It was the least-watched since the series’ third installment.

But when a show gets as big as “Empire” did earlier this year, it can fall — even sharply — and still tower over the competition.

— FOX led into “Empire” with “Rosewood” (1.4, 5.167 million). Last week’s drew a 1.5 with 5.049 million.

Wednesday’s edition of “Empire,” which was the seventh episode of the second season, suffered week-to-week losses in adults 18-49 and total viewers.

It still ranked as Wednesday’s #1 broadcast television program in both columns.

Per Nielsen fast national data, this Wednesday’s “Empire” posted a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating with 11.146 million total viewers. Barring a big upward adjustment in the finals, it will rank as the season’s lowest-rated and least-watched episode.

Facing competition from ABC’s 49th Annual CMA Awards broadcast, last week’s “Empire” drew a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating with 11.677 million total viewers.

Not as hot as it was in the latter half of the first season or at the onset of the second season, “Empire” remains a live+same-day ratings monster. Thanks to strong DVR interest, it also continues to resonate in the live+3 and live+7 reports. It is still a major hit series.

— FOX led into “Empire” with “Rosewood,” which posted a 1.4 with 5.208 million total viewers. Last week’s broadcast drew a 1.5 with 5.049 million.
