Buoyed by ample buzz and excellent reviews, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” dominated the US Friday box office.
The film earned an impressive $50.5 million in its first day of release. The tally more than quadruples that of the day’s #2 film.
It also bests the opening day marks delivered by 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” as well as those of 2002’s “Spider-Man” and 2004’s “Spider-Man 2.”
In terms of Spider-Man movies, only 2007’s “Spider-Man 3” ($59.9 million) had a bigger opening day.
Based on the $50.5 million Friday performance, analysts expect “Spider-Man: Homecoming” to generate upwards of $120 million this weekend.
“Despicable Me 3,” last weekend’s winner, was #2 at this Friday’s box office. It earned $11.3 million.
“Baby Driver” followed at #3 with $3.9 million, while “Wonder Woman” (#4, $2.9 million) and “Transformers: The Last Knight” (#5, $1.8 million) completed the Top 5.
