Memorial Day Weekend runs through Monday, but based on the holiday weekend’s first three days, it is clear which film will prevail as #1.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is by far the weekend’s biggest draw at US cinemas. The film will earn an estimated $65.0 million during the first three days of the weekend.
While that markedly trails the $90.8 million earned by previous “X-Men” film “Days Of Future Past” during the first three days of Memorial Day weekend in 2014, it easily ranks as this weekend’s best tally.
It is comfortably outperforming “Alice Through The Looking Glass,” which is set to gross a disappointing $28.1 million across the three-day weekend. Predecessor “Alice In Wonderland” earned a far stronger $116.1 million in its first outing.
“The Angry Birds Movie,” last weekend’s leader, is third for the three-day period with $18.7 million. “Captain America: Civil War” takes fourth with $15.1 million, while “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” grabs #5 on the strength of $9.1 million.
