“Incredibles 2” Sets US Opening Day Record For Animated Film, Will Also Set Weekend Record

“Incredibles 2” got off to a mammoth start at the US box office.

Incredibles 2 - Disney/Pixar

“Incredibles 2” attracted a considerable amount of attention in its first day at the US box office.

Record-setting attention, in fact.

The eagerly anticipated sequel earned $71.5 million at the Friday box office (with Thursday previews included). The tally, which ranked as the day’s best by a multiple of 12, is the best ever attained by an animated film.

Previous record-holder “Finding Dory” earned $54.8 million on opening day.

On track to earn $175-185 million in its first three days, “Incredibles 2” will also set the opening weekend record among animated films. “Dory,” which holds that record as of this writing, earned $135.0 million in its inaugural frame.

If it lands in the projected range, “Incredibles 2” will also score one of the ten biggest opening weekends for any film. “Iron Man 3,” the current #10 film, earned $174.1 million in its first weekend.

— As for Friday, “Ocean’s 8” took second place with $5.9 million. “Tag” grabbed #3 with $5.4 million, while a daily gross of $2.3 million positioned “Solo: A Star Wars Story” in #4.

“Deadpool 2,” the day’s #5 film, earned $2.3 million.
