None of the major newcomers is posting massive numbers at the US box office, but one will claim first place this weekend.

That chart-topping newcomer is “Midway.” The film led the Friday box office with $6.3 million, and it should close the weekend in the $17-20 million range.

“Doctor Sleep,” which realistically should have been expected to win the weekend, is posting disappointing numbers. The film took second place with $5.2 million on Friday, and it will likely finish the weekend in the $11.5-14 million range.

“Last Christmas” (#3 with $4.1 million Friday, $10.5-12.5 million weekend) and “Playing With Fire” (#4 with $3.6 million Friday, $10.5-12.5 million weekend) are on track for similarly modest bows, but neither came with the hype of “Doctor Sleep.”
