“The Meg” made a big opening day splash at the US box office.

The film led Friday with an impressive $16.5 million.

The tally, which more than triples that of the day’s #2 film, positions “The Meg” for an opening weekend in the $37-44 million range. It should easily rank as the weekend’s #1 film.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” took second place Friday. The film added $5.3 million to its haul.

New release “Slender Man” grabbed #3 with $4.9 million, while a gross of $3.6 million slotted “Christopher Robbin” in fourth place.

Credited with $3.6 million, the new “BlacKkKlansman” earned #5 at the Friday box office.
