In addition to dominating the weekend box office in the US, “Zootopia” set an opening weekend record for a Walt Disney Animation Studio release.
Per studio estimates, the film earned approximately $73.7 million in its first weekend of release at the US box office. More than three times that of the weekend’s runner-up (“London Has Fallen,” $21.7 million), the count edges the $67.4 million posted by “Frozen” in its first weekend of wide release.
In terms of first weekends, period, the Disney Animation record previously belonged to “Big Hero 6.” It debuted with $56.2 million.
After multiple weeks on top, “Deadpool” slips to #3 behind “Zootopia” and “London Has Fallen” on this week’s chart. Its weekend gross of $16.4 million does, however, bring the film’s cume past the $300 million mark. Now in its fourth weekend, “Deadpool” has earned $311.2 million in the US.
New release “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” takes #4 with a disappointing $7.6 million, while “Gods Of Egypt” grabs #5 on the strength of $5.0 million.
