“Dumb and Dumber To” Tops Friday Box Office, “Beyond the Lights” at #4

“Dumb and Dumber To,” the long-awaited sequel to “Dumb and Dumber, cruised to a convincing victory at the Friday box office.

The new release, which launched on 3,154 screens, grabbed $14.2 million in receipts Friday. That gave it the edge over “Interstellar,” which scored second place courtesy its $8.3 million in ticket purchases.

“Big Hero 6,” last week’s winner, followed with $8.0 million. Like last week, it is expected to overtake “Interstellar” by the end of the weekend courtesy Saturday matinee interest.

Critically acclaimed new release “Beyond the Lights,” which opened on 1,789 screens, landed in fourth with a modest $2.3 million. “Gone Girl,” which will cross the $150 million threshold this weekend, held fifth place with $1.4 million.
