“Lego Movie” Slightly Edges “About Last Night” at Box Office

Here’s the thing “About Last Night” – “The Lego Movie” actually drew more box office money than any date movie.

According to the latest reports, “The Lego Movie” earned $13.03 million, while Kevin Hart’s newcomer “About Last Night” grabbed $13.00 million at Friday’s Valentine’s Day Box office.

Granted, the race was close. And if one approaches the question on a per-screen basis, “About Last Night” ($5,770 per screen) drew considerably more than “Lego” ($3,452 per screen).

“About Last Night” might maintain that per-screen edge as the weekend continues, but by the end of President’s Day, “Lego” will create significant distance in the total box office race. Set to benefit from Saturday matinees and the work/school holiday on Monday, “The Lego Movie” will easily win the 4-day weekend.

“About Last Night” was not the only film strategically released on Valentine’s Day. Fellow newcomer “Endless Love” also positioned itself as a date movie, and it claimed third with $7.30 million. “Winter’s Tale,” meanwhile, opened in sixth place to the tune of $3.66 million.

Released as alternative fare, “Robocop” placed fourth with $7.00 million. “The Monuments Men” slipped to fifth place with $5.00 million in Valentine’s Day receipts.
