“Avengers: Endgame” is more than living up to commercial expectations. The blockbuster film opened with the biggest single-day haul in US box office history — and it is sure to post the biggest opening weekend figure as well.

The film grossed $156.7 million in its opening Friday (with late Thursday previews included), obliterating the all-time record of $119.1 million held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

The opening day tally positions “Endgame” for a debut weekend haul in the vicinity of $350 million. That, too, would represent a dominant record; “Avengers: Infinity War,” the previous record-holder, earned $257.7 million in its first outing.
