“The Nun” Unsurprisingly Dominates US Friday Box Office

Bad reviews did not keep “The Nun” from dominating the US Friday box office.

The horror film earned $22.4 million on opening day. The figure represents a new record for a film in “The Conjuring Universe.”

It meanwhile positions “The Nun” for an opening weekend in the $47-52 million range. That, too, will represents a franchise record.

“The Conjuring 2,” the current record-holder, earned $40.4 million.

New release “Peppermint” took second place Friday with $4.7 million, while a gross of $3.8 million slotted “Crazy Rich Asians” in third.

“Searching” (#4, $1.4 million) and “The Meg” (#5, $1.4 million) completed the day’s Top 5.
