The weekend’s only major new release is on pace to rank as the weekend’s highest-grossing film.

“Kong: Skull Island,” that newcomer, led the Friday US box office with $20.3 million in receipts. The tally nearly doubles that of the #2 film and positions “Kong” for a weekend victory.

“Logan,” last weekend’s winner, was #2 Friday with $10.4 million.

“Get Out” took #3 with $6.0 million in Friday earnings. The critically acclaimed film will cross the $100 million cumulative mark this weekend.

“The Shack” (#4, $2.7 million) and “The LEGO Batman Movie” (#5, $1.7 million) rounded out Friday’s Top 5.
