M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split” easily tops “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” — and all other films — for #1 at the US weekend box office.

Per studio estimates, “Split” earned $40.2 million at the box office this week. The tally more than doubles that of the #2 film.

“Return Of Xander Cage,” that #2 film, grossed $20.0 million in its first weekend of release.

“Hidden Figures,” last week’s winner, slips to #3 with a still-strong $16.3 million (cume now $84.2 million). “Sing” drops one place to #4 with $9.0 million (cume now $249.4 million), while “La La Land” falls three places to #5 with $8.4 million (cume now $89.7 million).
