“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Bests “The Revenant” at Weekend Box Office

The Force Awakens [Official]

“The Revenant” put up a fight, but it proved unable to dethrone “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at the weekend box office.

“Star Wars,” which this week surpassed “Avatar” to become the highest-grossing film in US box office history, earned an estimated $41.6 million this weekend (for a cumulative gross of $812.0 million). That gave it the edge over “Revenant,” which earned $38.0 million in its first weekend of wide release.

“Daddy’s Home” follows at #3 with $15.0 million, while new release “The Forest” takes #4 with $13.1 million.

Thanks to $7.2 million in estimated weekend receipts, “Sisters” grabs #5.
