“Fantastic Four” Wins Friday Box Office But Disappoints; “The Gift” Claims #3

Fantastic Four [NBC]

Hurt by abysmal reviews and a general lack of enthusiasm in the franchise, the new “Fantastic Four” got off to a disappointing start.

The new release grossed a mere $11.3 million at the Friday box office. While that was enough to claim the #1 position, it is a far cry from what would typically be expected of a high-profile superhero film.

It also may not position “Fantastic Four” for a weekend victory. “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” which earned $8.2 million Friday (#2), is expected to close the gap — and potentially outperform — “Fantastic Four” on Saturday and Sunday. It could easily end up with the stronger weekend total.

Critically acclaimed new release “The Gift” claimed Friday’s #3 position with $4.1 million. “Vacation” ($2.7M, #4) and “Ant-Man” ($2.3M, #5) completed the top 5.

New release “Ricki and the Flash,” which earned $2.3 million, earned #6.
