“Rogue Nation” Wins Weekend Box Office, Disappointing “Vacation” Takes Second

Unchallenged by the rest of the pack, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” easily claimed victory at the weekend box office.

Per studio estimates, the film will post an opening weekend total of $56.0 million. That tally, which trails the “Mission: Impossible II” gross as the second-highest for an “M:I” film, tops that of its nearest competitor by a factor of nearly 4.

“Vacation,” that competitor, earned a disappointing $14.9 million this weekend. With its Wednesday and Thursday grosses included, the film’s cumulative total stands at an unremarkable $21.2 million.

“Ant-Man,” which reigned atop the box office for two straight weeks, slips to #3 ($12.6 million; $132.1 million total). “Minions” (#4, $12.2 million, $287.4 million total) and “Pixels” (#5, $10.4 million, $45.6 million total) complete the top five.
