“Ant-Man” Tops Friday Box Office, “Trainwreck” Sets Apatow High; “Jurassic World” Hits $600M

A solid Friday showing puts “Ant-Man” on track to easily win the weekend box office race.

The critically acclaimed superhero adaptation generated $22.6 million in receipts Friday. While that tally makes the anticipated $60 million-plus weekend less of a guarantee, it keeps “Ant-Man” at a respectable distance from the rest of the pack.

Expected to earn in the $45-50 million territory this weekend, Friday’s #2 film “Minions” generated $14.6 million in daily business.

New release “Trainwreck,” meanwhile, grossed $10.7 million in its opening day. Undoubtedly owed to great reviews and a surge of buzz surrounding star Amy Schumer, the daily tally is the best for a Judd Apatow-directed film. Apatow’s previous high mark came courtesy “Knocked Up,” which earned $9.8 million on day one and $30.7 million in its first weekend.

“Inside Out” ($3.34 million) and “Jurassic World” ($3.2 million) were Friday’s #4 and #5 films, respectively. The $3.2 million Friday gross pushed “Jurassic World” past the $600 million mark; its cumulative US total now stands at $603.0 million.
