“Insurgent” Opens On Par with “Divergent,” Wins Weekend Box Office

Thanks to an opening weekend gross that nearly mirrors that of 2014’s “Divergent,” new release “Insurgent” secured victory at the box office.

According to official studio estimates, the film earned $54.0 million across its first three days of release. “Divergent,” which launched during the corresponding 2014 weekend, started with $54.6 million.

As far as this weekend goes, “Cinderella” claimed the runner-up position with $34.5 million. Nothing else was even close.

“Run all Night” earned third place with $5.1 million, while new release “The Gunman” landed in fourth with a mere $5.0 million. “Kingsman: The Secret Service” grabbed fifth on the strength of $4.6 million.

Semi-wide release “Do You Believe?” earned $4.0 million from 1,320 theaters. It was the weekend’s #6 film.
