“Mockingjay” Dominates “Penguins,” “Horrible Bosses 2” at Thanksgiving Box Office

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” earned more on Thanksgiving Day than the week’s two high profile newcomers did combined.

The third “Hunger Games” film drew $11.1 million in receipts Thursday, which gave it a comfortable edge over “Penguins of Madagascar” and “Horrible Bosses 2.” Those two, which both launched Wednesday, earned $4.0 million and $3.1 million, respectively.

Undeniably dominant, the “Mockingjay” total nonetheless trailed what predecessor “Catching Fire” earned on Thanksgiving Day. That film earned $15.0 million on Thursday, November 28, 2013.

“Big Hero 6” settled for fourth with $3.1 million, while “Interstellar” grabbed fifth position on $3.0 million.
