After opening to $37.8 million Friday, “Guardians of the Galaxy” maintained its expected pace and finished its first weekend with $94.0 million in box office receipts.

That ranks as 2014’s third-biggest opening weekend. Only “Transformers: Age of Extinction” ($100.0 million) and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” ($95.0 million) scored larger first weekend grosses.

The “Guardians” total also convincingly tops the $69.3 million earned by 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum” to score the biggest all-time opening weekend for the month of August.

“Lucy” followed “Guardians of the Galaxy” for a distant second place at this weekend’s box office. It earned $18.3 million.

New release “Get on Up” landed in third with $14.0 million, while “Hercules” ($10.7 million) and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” ($8.7 million) completed the top five.
