“Thor” Wins Weekend Box Office, “Jumping the Broom” Impresses, “Fast Five” Still Big

“Thor” predictably won the weekend box office battle, grossing an estimated total that more than doubles that of its nearest competitor.

Estimates have the comic adaptation grossing $66 million in its first weekend, which puts it right on par with most projections. The well-reviewed picture therefore had little trouble topping last week’s winner “Fast Five,” which fell to $32.5 million for its second week. Though that makes for a big 62% drop, it is consistent with the trajectory for “Fast & Furious” and thus still keeps the current sequel more than $20 million ahead of its predecessor.

Low-budget “Jumping the Broom” impressed at number three, posting a very-respectable $13.7 million in its first outing. If the estimate holds up, it will have narrowly-topped the more high-profile “Something Borrowed,” which landed at $13.2 million despite releasing in about 900 more theatres.

On the platform front, there was little fanfare for Mel Gibson’s “The Beaver.” The film pulled only $104,000 from 22 screens, making for a terrible $4700 per-screen average.

Weekend Top Ten:
1) Thor – $66M
2) Fast Five – $32.5M ($139.8M)
3) Jumping the Broom – $13.7M
4) Something Borrowed – $13.2M
5) Rio – $8.2M ($114.9M)
6) Water for Elephants – $5.6M ($41.6M)
7) Madea’s Big Happy Family – $3.9M ($46.8M)
8) Prom – $2.4M ($7.8M)
9) Soul Surfer – $2.1M ($36.7M)
10) Hoodwinked Too! – $1.9 ($6.7M)
