“Wrecking Ball” Leapfrogs “Roar,” But Lorde’s “Royals” Rules Hot 100

By making considerable airplay gains at a time when Katy Perry’s “Roar” is slowing on all measures, Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” leapfrogged into the number two position on the Billboard Hot 100.

Those radio gains were not, however, enough to thrust “Wrecking Ball” past Lorde’s “Royals,” which rules the chart for its third consecutive week.

No longer the top alternative song, “Royals” continues to rule Billboard’s most important singles chart. It, the most-download single in the US and second-most-played on the radio, also leads the Hot Rock Songs category.

Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” remained in fourth place, behind “Roar,” while Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” held at five. Ylvis’ “The Fox” claimed sixth, besting Jay-Z’s seventh-place “Holy Grail.”

Other top ten finishers, in order, were Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais’ “Summertime Sadness.”
