“Bang Bang,” “All About That Bass” Make Another Pop Radio Splash

Several new songs successfully entered the fray at pop radio this week, but programmers remained most fixated on a trio of previously released songs.

Jessie J + Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj’s “Bang Bang,” which ranked as most-added upon impact last week, extended its reign for a second frame. The song, which is already #19 on the airplay chart, won support from another 91 stations.

Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” which recently reached #1 on iTunes, had another successful adds week. Now the #20 song at pop and the second-fastest riser (excluding “Bang Bang,” which has not been available for two full weeks and thus a difficult point of comparison) behind Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap,” “Bass” landed at 32 new stations this week.

Clean Bandit’s breakthrough “Rather Be (featuring Jess Glynne)” is already up to #13 for airplay, but it is not done getting added. The song received new support from 27 stations this week.

Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow (featuring Rita Ora)” tied for fourth place with Pitbull’s “Fireball (featuring John Ryan).” Both songs scored 25 adds this week; the latter was the best-performing new track.

Jeremih’s newly-impacting “Don’t Tell ‘Em (featuring YG)” followed with 24 adds. Lil Jon’s “Bend Ova (featuring Tyga)” scored the same 24 one week ahead of its official impact.

Katy Perry’s “This is How We Do,” which officially impacts alongside “Bend Ova” (and several other songs) next week, landed at 23 stations to rank as eighth-most-added. Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailando (featuring Descemer Bueno, Sean Paul and Gente de Zona)” (22 adds) and 5 Seconds of Summer’s “Amnesia” (21 adds) also had strong weeks.

MKTO’s “American Dream” and David Guetta’s “Lovers on the Sun (featuring Sam Martin),” which were both new to the format this week, had modest weeks with 12 adds each.

Since Mediabase’s airplay chart only includes data from monitored reporters, it is also worth looking at how songs fared specifically with those stations:

1) Jessie J + Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj – Bang Bang – 85 monitored adds
2) Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass – 30 monitored adds
3) Clean Bandit – Rather Be featuring Jess Glynne – 26 monitored adds
4) Iggy Azalea – Black Widow featuring Rita Ora – 25 monitored adds
5) Lil Jon – Bend Ova featuring Tyga – 24 monitored adds
5) Pitbull – Fireball featuring John Ryan – 24 monitored adds
7) Jeremih – Don’t Tell Em featuring YG – 22 monitored adds
8) Katy Perry – This is How We Do – 19 monitored adds
9) 5 Seconds of Summer – Amnesia – 18 monitored adds
9) Enrique Iglesias – Bailando featuring Descemer Bueno, Sean Paul and Gente de Zona – 18 monitored adds
