ABC Locks Up “Agents of SHIELD” for a Full Season

Undeterred by its downward ratings trajectory, ABC has officially picked up “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” for a full season.

The network ordered the back nine Thursday, giving the heavily-hyped new series a full twenty-two episode order.

After premiering to mammoth numbers, the new series suffered declines in each of its subsequent airings.

Those declines did not, however, take “SHIELD” out of the competitive mix. Tuesday’s 2.9 adults 18-49 gave the show a second place finish in the timeslot, and with none of ABC’s launches performing better, it was impossible to deny the lure of booking the Marvel series for a full season.

ABC becomes the third of the big four networks to extend the run of a freshman series. FOX has already confirmed “Sleepy Hollow” for a second season, while NBC recently gave its hot newcomer “The Blacklist” a back nine order.
