Floyd Mayweather Defeats Canelo Alvarez, One Judge Claims Draw

There’s one at every party.

Boxing judges have not done well for their own reputations in recent years, but one really pushed the envelope Saturday by ruling the Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez fight a draw.

Luckily for those who watched the fight, the other two found in favor of the winner, scoring the bout 116-112 and 117-111 in favor of “Money.”

From the get-go, Mayweather’s speed, awareness and technique advantages worked the same magic on Alvarez that they have done on so many other fighters. They took the 23-year-old star out of his element, forcing him to throw from uncomfortable positions without any confidence.

Alvarez was never totally out of the fight–and did have a dominant eighth round–but Mayweather’s quickness, vision and experience were simply too much for him. Even as Mayweather made his contentedness to ride out the final round abundantly clear, a hungry Alvarez simply had nothing for the undefeated megastar.

And when all was said in done, two of the judges found in favor of the fight’s clear winner. Mayweather remains undefeated, and a top prospect sees his momentum at least temporarily stalled.

Floyd Mayweather defeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez via majority decision (114-114, 117-111, 116-112)
