ABC swept the primetime ratings race Friday, riding solid premiere performances from its new comedies and a series-high showing from “Shark Tank” to an impressive victory.
“Shark Tank,” representing the rare modern television series that has gained momentum as it has progressed, moved to a 2.3 adults 18-49 rating and 7.3 million viewers in its new 9PM timeslot.
Of course, it did not get to that series high without some help. A guest turn from Seth MacFarlane clearly generated some additional interest, while a healthy lead-in from Reba McEntire’s “Malibu Country” also provided assistance. That show, leading out of the season premiere for relocated “Last Man Standing” (1.9 rating, 7.8 million viewers), premiered to a solid 2.2 with 8.9 million viewers.
While neither of those comedies drew a massive rating from a numerical standpoint, considering the struggle facing a lot of series this year and the fact that they’re airing on Friday night, the performances were impressive.
If both hold in this general ballpark, the addition of a Friday comedy hour will be considered successful for ABC.
“20/20” won the 10PM hour with a 1.5 and 5.4 million viewers.
