Seacrest: Miley’s “The Climb” is “Idol” Song of Choice

In a Twitter update this week, “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest said that Miley Cyrus’ hit “The Climb” has been the most popular song selection for “Idol” hopefuls at the season nine auditions.

“The Climb,” which is Cyrus’ highest-charting single to date, relied on a broad, inspirational message to appeal to fans outside of the tween “Hannah Montana” demographic. It thematically resembles many of the “Idol” coronation songs, and with a straightforward melody that allows for unique vocal interpretation, is a natural fit for the “Idol” audition phase.

Over the past eight seasons, judges have repeatedly cautioned potential contestants against choosing ballads from singers like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, noting that it is nearly impossible to compare to the original version. Having performed the song to mediocre reviews on an episode of “Idol” this year, Cyrus did not set such intimidating standards for her song.

“American Idol” returns for its ninth season in January 2010.
