Across its many seasons, USA Network’s “Suits” has earned a reputation for stellar song choices.
Wednesday’s summer finale lived up to that reputation. The closing moments of the episode featured Dean Lewis’ “Waves.”
The Australian hit scored two key storyline developments.
— One involved a major change for Pearson Specter Litt.
Andrew Malik may not have been able to beat Harvey in the case, but he still managed to deliver a devastating blow to his old colleague.
Malik focused on something everyone else had forgotten: when speaking at Mike’s bar hearing, Jessica admitted she knew he was a fraud. Using that confession, Malik filed to have Jessica disbarred in New York.
Jessica (Gina Torres) showed up in the final moments to tell a rattled Harvey that she had no plan to fight the decision.
Her disbarment, of course, has a major ramification: she obviously cannot be a named partner at the law firm. At peace with that reality, Jessica urged Harvey to step up, remove her name from the wall, and truly take control of the firm.
— The other concerned the “will they or won’t they” between Donna and Harvey.
Earlier in the episode, Rachel clued Mike into Donna’s feelings regarding Harvey — including letting her commitment to Harvey ruin her past relationship.
Mike subsequently urged Donna to tell Harvey how she feels. With Harvey and Paula’s relationship growing more serious, the window for such a confession was closing.
Donna resisted, noting that there was nothing to confess. Neither she nor Harvey wants to be together.
An emotional, late-episode speech from Louis changed things. Louis discussed his ongoing love for Sheila — and his regret over not more assertively telling her how he feels.
The sentiment resonates with Donna. And when Harvey walks into her office to talk about Jessica, she greets him with a kiss.
“I’m sorry, Harvey. I just had to know,” says Donna upon withdrawing from the kiss. She leaves the office, and Harvey stands speechless as the summer season concludes.
“Suits” will resume its seventh season early next year.
